Your VISA® debit card will be replaced by a new debit card that carries the Mastercard® logo. Here is what you need to know:

  • Existing VISA® debit cards will stop working on or around October 31, 2019.Mastercard logo
  • Your new Mastercard® debit card should be activated as soon as you receive it, which should be between August 1, 2019 and October 15, 2019. If you do not receive your new debit card by October 15, 2019, please call us right away, at 804.359.8754, option 2.
  • Your old VISA® debit card will continue to work along with your new Mastercard® debit card, until on or around October 31, 2019.
  • You will receive a new PIN separately from your new Mastercard® debit card.

Why is RVA Financial switching to Mastercard®?
You will have a brand-new card with a brand-new card number, providing increased protection against fraud and loss for you as well as for the credit union. More importantly, you will gain benefits such as Price Protection, an Extended Warranty for purchases made using your new Mastercard® debit card, ID Theft Protection Services, Dark Web Monitoring for illegal use of your personal information, and more. All of this will be provided at no cost to you.

I just received a new VISA® debit card, or my VISA® debit card will not expire for quite some time. Can I continue to use it in addition to my new Mastercard®?
You may be able to use either card for a brief period of time. On or around October 31, 2019, your VISA® debit card will stop working and you will be required to start using your Mastercard® debit card for all transactions. You will receive your Mastercard® debit card in advance of the “go live” date, by October 15, 2019, and you may begin using it as soon as you receive it and activate it. If you do not receive your new Mastercard® debit card by October 15, 2019, please call us at 804.359.8754, option 2.

Will I receive a new PIN with my Mastercard® debit card, or can I continue to use my old PIN?
You will receive a new PIN with your new debit card. Your old PIN will no longer work. Your new PIN will arrive in a separate mailing from your new debit card for security reasons.

How does my new Mastercard® debit card compare to my current VISA® debit card?
In addition to gaining the benefits listed in the first FAQ question above, you should know that both Mastercard® and VISA® are accepted at over 40 million merchant locations worldwide. In addition, Mastercard® is accepted at 2.5 million ATMs worldwide, while VISA® is accepted at 1.1 million ATMs worldwide.

Will my new debit card be EMV-ready?
Yes, your new debit card will contain an EMV chip that allows for more secure transactions at ATMs and merchant points of sale.

My spouse or someone else in my household also has a debit card with RVA Financial, on their own account. Will they be receiving a new debit card, too?
Yes! Every current VISA® debit cardholder with RVA Financial who actively uses their card will be receiving a replacement Mastercard®.

A joint owner on my account also has a debit card. Will they be receiving a new debit card, too?
Yes! Every current VISA® debit cardholder with RVA Financial who actively uses their card will be receiving a replacement Mastercard®.

I have an active ATM card. What will happen to my ATM card?
No changes will be made to your ATM card. It will remain active.

Will there be any changes to my statements?
No changes will be made to your statements.

Will I be required to use a PIN for every transaction?
This is up to the merchant. Some merchants may require you to enter a PIN when you use your debit card to make a purchase, and other merchants will allow you to choose either PIN or signature.

What if I do not remember my PIN?
If you do not remember your PIN, you may call us at 804.359.8754.

Will I be charged a fee for using my PIN for purchases?
No, we will not charge a fee if you use your PIN for purchases.
